Walmart’s InHome delivery to reach more than 45 million in US

Walmart is expanding its in-home delivery service to reach 10 million potential customers, increasing it by nearly 30%. It is targeting markets such as Southern California, Boston, Detroit, Minneapolis, and Philadelphia. InHome, initially launched in 2019, uses specially trained delivery personnel who access homes using one-time smart lock codes and record the delivery with body cameras.

Why Walmart is Expanding InHome Delivery

Walmart aims to enhance customer convenience, recognizing that busy customers appreciate a seamless shopping experience. Despite mixed industry views, some analysts see significant growth potential in the in-home delivery market.

Using InHome to Drive Customer Loyalty

Carson Krieg from Project44 highlights that while InHome appeals to a niche audience, this segment is highly loyal and valuable. The service mainly benefits elderly customers or those with health conditions, potentially creating a new subset of loyal customers. Other retailers may try to emulate Walmart’s strategy as it continues to dominate the grocery segment.

Innovation and Competition

Jeremy Barlow from PA Consulting notes that although InHome is expanding, its initial usage may be low due to consumer behaviour and trust barriers. However, the trend towards ultimate convenience could make it a solid long-term strategy. Competitors will find it challenging to replicate the service nationally, giving Walmart a competitive edge.

The InHome concept originated from Walmart’s Store No. 8 incubator, designed to test new ideas and keep pace with rivals like Amazon.

Expansion Details

  • New Markets: Besides Greater Philadelphia, the service is now available in Boston, Detroit, Minneapolis, and San Bernardino.
  • Coverage: InHome now reaches over 45 million homes across more than 50 markets.

How InHome Works

  1. Order: Customers shop on Walmart.com or the Walmart app and select the InHome delivery window.
  2. Delivery: A trained InHome associate completes the delivery using a one-time home or garage entry access code. Deliveries are recorded via a wearable camera for customer review.

  • InHome Add-On: Available as an add-on to Walmart+ membership for $12.95/month or $98/year.
  • Walmart+ Members: Can add InHome delivery for an extra $7/month or $40/year, gaining access to various digital and in-store benefits.
