Server-side Google Tag Manager (SGTM) no longer supports loading the Google Tag library (gtag.js) via the built-in GA4 Client. Instead, all Google JavaScript libraries must now be loaded using the Web Container Client. To load gtag.js files through SGTM, you need to create or modify a Web Container Client and allowlist the Google Tag Measurement IDs.
If you load Google Tag Manager through SGTM using the Web Container Client, enabling the "Automatically serve all dependent Google scripts" option will handle any Google Tags loaded through that GTM web container automatically, without needing to list Measurement IDs separately.
This update does not require loading a full web container for GTM through SGTM; you can simply use the Web Container Client to allow loading gtag.js files by listing their Measurement IDs in the "Allowed Container IDs" table. The explanation acknowledges this change can be confusing and offers clarification if needed. Learn more.
