The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is an open standard designed to simplify online shopping. Recent updates introduce new optional capabilities developed with community contributors to enhance the shopping experience. These include a Cart option allowing agents to save or add multiple items from a single store simultaneously, and a Catalog feature enabling agents to retrieve real-time product details such as variants, inventory, and pricing. UCP also supports Identity Linking, which lets shoppers receive loyalty or member benefits like special pricing or free shipping across UCP-integrated platforms, creating a more connected shopping experience.
Google plans to integrate UCP capabilities into AI Mode in Search, the Gemini app, and other shopping experiences. To expand adoption, Google is simplifying the UCP onboarding process through Google’s Merchant Center, rolling out in the coming months. Partners like Commerce Inc, Salesforce, and Stripe will soon implement UCP on their platforms, aiming to improve online shopping and selling for a broader range of retailers and consumers.
