The Google Trends API has been launched, providing a new way to access Trends data beyond the website. Initially available to a limited number of alpha testers, the API aims to meet the growing demand for scalable data usage. It offers various use cases for researchers, publishers, and businesses, enabling better resource allocation, trend tracking, and content strategy development.
Data Availability
The API provides search interest data for the past 1800 days (approximately 5 years) with daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly aggregations. It allows for geo-restricted data based on regions and sub-regions.
Consistently Scaled Data
Unlike the Trends website, which scales data from 0 to 100, the API offers consistently scaled data that facilitates comparisons across multiple requests. This method allows developers to monitor specific terms over time without needing to pull the entire dataset for each request.
Time Range and Aggregations
The API's focus on a 5-year rolling window is designed to support analyses related to significant events like elections and sports. Users can aggregate data in various time frames, providing flexibility for merging Trends data with other reports.
Geographical Data
The API will include geographical breakdowns according to the ISO 3166-2 standard.
Alpha Testing
The Google Trends team is seeking feedback from developers interested in testing the API. Access will be granted on a rolling basis, with plans to expand availability in the coming months.
