Instagram has begun a live test of expanded Notes options on Feed Posts and Reels with selected users. The Notes feature, launched in December 2022, allows users to leave engagement triggers for others in the app, a feature that has been particularly popular with younger users. Instagram's decision to expand Notes to all areas of the app comes as part of an effort to retain its younger demographic in the face of growing competition from TikTok.
The initial addition of Notes to user inboxes was followed by tests of Notes on profiles, Reels, and feed posts, which are now being expanded. The success of Notes among teen users, who are about 10 times more likely to create a Note in the app compared to other users, suggests that the feature could be successful in other contexts as well.
Users who are not interested in the feature can simply ignore it, making it a low-risk experiment for Instagram. If Notes on feed posts and Reels prove popular, it could represent another win for the platform. Instagram has been asked for more information on the new test and updates will be provided as they become available.
