March Core Update & Spam Updates: Four Major Trends
The March Core Update concluded on April 19, 2024, aimed at reducing low-quality content and spam. Google also rolled out a new spam policy violation, "site reputation abuse," after May 5, 2024. The SEO and marketing communities anticipated these updates due to significant traffic declines following the September 2023 Helpful Content Update and increasing reports of spam and low-quality information.
Four major outcomes of the 45-day update include:
Reddit's SEO traffic surge: Reddit experienced rapid SEO visibility growth, particularly after Google's "Hidden Gems" update. Google and Reddit announced a partnership, with Google paying Reddit $60 million annually for direct API access. However, Google stated the agreement did not include ranking Reddit's content higher on Search.
Drop in visibility for news and affiliate websites: Many informational sites that monetize through display ads and affiliate links saw a significant decline in visibility. This pattern is consistent with a trend affecting these sites over the past few years.
Google's 45% reduction in unhelpful content: Google claimed a 45% reduction in unhelpful content following the March Core and Spam updates. This drop likely resulted from the "pure spam" manual actions issued to thousands of sites during the March Spam Update.
No relief for Helpful Content Update sites: Sites affected by the September Helpful Content Update saw no known traffic recoveries following the March Core Update. Most of the affected sites experienced further traffic and visibility declines.
Post-update, algorithmic volatility continues, with the "site reputation abuse" component still rolling out. Google's algorithms continue to show unusual volatility.
