Microsoft is employing deceptive tactics to promote its Bing search engine by creating a search result page that mimics Google. When users search for "Google" on Bing without signing in, they encounter a page designed to resemble Google's interface, complete with a search bar and an image similar to a Google Doodle. This special interface appears only for the Google search query, while other searches display standard Bing results.
The strategy aims to mislead users, especially those configuring new PCs and searching for Google in Microsoft Edge's address bar, encouraging them to continue using Bing. Google’s Chrome head, Parisa Tabriz, criticized Microsoft's actions on social media, labeling it as a tactic to confuse users and limit their choices.
Microsoft has a history of such practices, including altering Chrome download sites, displaying pop-up ads in Google Chrome, and using aggressive methods to persuade users to switch from Google to Bing or Edge. In contrast, Google's efforts to promote Chrome over Edge are less forceful and do not involve similar deceptive strategies.
