Imagine a future where you can enjoy content that makes you laugh or teaches you something, regardless of its origin or language. Meta is working towards this vision by expanding translation capabilities for creators on Facebook and Instagram. Initially offering bidirectional translations between English and Spanish, Meta has now added Hindi and Portuguese, with plans for more languages in the future.
Since announcing translations with Meta AI in 2024, the focus has been on making content accessible. Many creators expressed a desire to reach global audiences, influencing the development of these translation features. With Meta AI, creators can now translate and dub their reels, effectively breaking down language barriers and reaching larger audiences across Instagram and Facebook.
The translation service is free for Facebook creators with 1,000 followers or more and all public Instagram accounts in regions where Meta AI is available. The technology mimics the creator's voice to maintain authenticity in translations, and a lip-syncing feature can be enabled for a more natural viewing experience.
User experience is prioritized, allowing viewers to control their language preferences. Every translated reel is labeled as "Translated with Meta AI," and users can opt to turn translations on or off or watch content in its original language through the settings menu. This initiative is part of Meta's broader effort to connect people globally and enhance content accessibility.
