Google has announced new updates to its visual search tool, Google Lens. The company reports that Lens is used for nearly 20 billion visual searches monthly, with 20% being shopping-related.
1. Instant Product Details
Google is introducing a new feature that displays key product information when Lens identifies an item in a photo. Users will see:
- Prices across retailers
- Current deals
- Product reviews
- Purchase options
With the updated Google Lens results, Shopping ads will now appear in this new placement. This feature is rolling out for Android and iOS devices in select countries, starting with popular holiday shopping categories like toys, electronics, and beauty.
2. Circle to Search Improvements
Circle to Search allows users to shop for items they see while browsing the web or watching videos without switching apps. Google reports:
- A third of users who have tried Circle to Search use it weekly
- Users can long-press the home button on select Android devices to activate the feature
- They can then circle, scribble, or tap a product on the screen to find similar options
3. Combined Text and Image Search
Lens now allows users to add text to their image searches to refine results. This feature is particularly useful for:
- Fashion shopping: Users can specify color or style preferences
- Furniture shopping: Users can add size or material preferences to find better matches
Google is gradually rolling out these features. Users can access Google Lens by tapping the Lens icon in the Google app for Android and iOS, or wherever they see the Google Search bar.
