Google announced significant updates to its Cryptocurrencies and related products policy, set to take effect on February 12, 2025. The policy revision primarily focuses on clarifying requirements for cryptocurrency-related businesses targeting the South African market.
New Requirements for South African Cryptocurrency Exchanges
For cryptocurrency exchanges targeting South Africa, Google outlined specific certification requirements. Advertisers must:
- Be registered with the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA)
- Obtain certification from Google
- Comply with all local legal requirements
Hardware and Software Wallet Advertising Guidelines
The updated policy addresses two distinct categories of cryptocurrency wallets:
Software Wallets
Advertisers offering software wallet services must meet the same requirements as cryptocurrency exchanges, including FSCA registration and Google certification.
Hardware Wallets
Google permits advertising of hardware wallets designed for storing private keys of:
- Cryptocurrencies
- NFTs
- Other crypto-based assets
However, hardware wallet advertisers cannot promote additional services such as purchasing, selling, exchanging, or trading assets.
Policy Enforcement
Google implemented a structured approach to policy enforcement:
- The policy applies globally to all accounts advertising cryptocurrency-related financial products
- Violations will not result in immediate account suspension
- Advertisers will receive a warning at least 7 days before any account suspension
The policy update reflects Google's commitment to maintaining regulatory compliance while providing opportunities for cryptocurrency businesses in the South African market.
