Google is testing a new "AI Mode" for Search, designed to facilitate open-ended and exploratory questions, providing generated AI Overview-style responses. This feature, powered by Gemini 2.0, is currently being trialed internally with Google employees.
The "AI Mode" aims to enhance the search experience for queries that traditional results do not adequately address, such as advice, comparisons, and follow-up questions. Example queries include:
- How many boxes of spaghetti should I buy to feed 6 adults and 10 children, and have enough for seconds?
- Compare wool, down, and synthetic jackets in terms of insulation, water resistance, and durability.
- What do I need to get started with aquascaping? (Follow-up: What are some nearby stores to buy supplies?)
This mode utilizes a custom version of Gemini 2.0, enabling advanced reasoning capabilities. The user interface is still in development, featuring a chatbot-like experience that replaces traditional search results with a fullscreen display of answers. Instead of the usual ten blue links, users can find links to explore further content on the right side of the screen.
Users can input queries via text or voice through the Google app on Android and iOS. Currently, the AI Mode is being tested with US employees, with a potential launch anticipated within the year, as indicated by CEO Sundar Pichai's comments on significant upcoming innovations in Search for 2025.
