The update on April 13, 2026, announces an expansion of spam policies to explicitly prohibit "back button hijacking," categorizing it as a violation under "malicious practices." This deceptive behavior disrupts users' expected browser navigation by preventing the back button from returning them to the previous page, instead redirecting them to unfamiliar pages or unsolicited content, which harms user experience and trust.
What is Back Button Hijacking?
Back button hijacking occurs when a website interferes with the browser's back button functionality, causing users to be redirected to unintended pages or shown unwanted ads, breaking the normal browsing flow.
Reason for Action
Google prioritizes user experience and recognizes that back button hijacking frustrates users and diminishes trust in websites. This practice has been against Google Search Essentials, and due to its increasing prevalence, it is now explicitly classified as a malicious practice. Such practices create a mismatch between user expectations and actual outcomes, leading to negative, deceptive experiences or security/privacy risks.
Enforcement and Impact
Sites engaging in back button hijacking may face manual spam actions or automated ranking demotions, affecting their visibility in Google Search results. The policy will be enforced starting June 15, 2026, with a two-month notice period for site owners to comply.
Guidance for Site Owners
Site owners must ensure no interference with browser navigation occurs. Any scripts or techniques that manipulate browser history to prevent normal back button use should be removed or disabled. Since some issues may stem from third-party libraries or advertising platforms, thorough technical reviews are recommended to eliminate back button hijacking sources. If a site is penalized but later fixed, owners can submit a reconsideration request via Search Console.
