ChatGPT Search, OpenAI's AI-driven web search feature, is now available to all users, offering enhanced functionalities. By default, it automatically selects questions for web search, or users can manually initiate a search via a new "Search the web" icon. The feature provides summarized answers from various online sources, including rich content like photos and YouTube videos.
Launched in October as an upgrade from the SearchGPT prototype, ChatGPT Search utilizes a fine-tuned version of OpenAI’s GPT-4o model to deliver information such as sports scores, news, and stock quotes, along with links for further exploration. Initially exclusive to premium subscribers, it is now accessible to all users.
OpenAI has improved the speed of ChatGPT Search and allowed it to be set as the default search engine in web browsers. The mobile experience has also been enhanced, featuring better-organized business information, including addresses and phone numbers.
Additionally, ChatGPT Search is compatible with Advanced Voice Mode, enabling real-time conversational access to web information on both mobile and desktop. Despite mixed reviews from early testers, OpenAI aims to refine this feature as a significant growth opportunity.
