The introduction of Gen AI Labels by Pinterest aims to enhance transparency regarding AI-generated content on the platform. Users have expressed a desire for more clarity and control over the Gen AI content they encounter. In response, Pinterest has been testing labels on image Pins that are identified as generated or modified by Gen AI, and these features are now being rolled out globally.
Matt Madrigal, Chief Technology Officer, emphasized that the goal is to empower users to make informed choices about the content they see, enhancing their ability to discover inspiration. The AI modified label will appear on image Pins when users view them in close-up, utilizing metadata analysis and classifiers to detect Gen AI content. An appeals system is also in place for users and creators who believe their content is mislabelled.
To further improve user experience, Pinterest plans to launch an experiment allowing users to select a ‘see fewer’ option for Gen AI Pins in specific categories like beauty and art. This feature will be accessible through the three-dot overflow menu on Pins, helping to reduce the recommendation of such content.
Pinterest believes that thoughtfully implemented Gen AI can inspire users and enhance their creative experiences. Additional tools related to AI are expected to be introduced in the coming months, with more information available in the Help Centre regarding Pinterest's use of AI.
