Google has launched a new AI feature called "Ask for Me" that makes calls to local businesses on behalf of users to gather information about pricing and availability. The feature is currently being tested through Google's Search Labs experiments and is accessible on both desktop and mobile platforms.
Initial Service Coverage
The pilot program currently focuses on two specific business categories:
- Auto repair shops
- Nail salons
How the Feature Works
Users enrolled in Search Labs can access "Ask for Me" by searching for local services like "oil change" or "nail salons nearby". The process begins with a "Get Started" button, where users can input specific service details such as "tire replacement," "factory scheduled maintenance," "french manicure," or "nail art." Users can also specify their preferred timeframe.
AI-Powered Communication
The system utilizes technology similar to Google Duplex to handle communications. Once user preferences are entered, Google's AI makes calls to local businesses and compiles a summary of prices and availability options for the user.
Privacy and Business Considerations
Google has implemented several important features for privacy and business autonomy:
- Businesses can opt out of receiving automated calls
- Participating businesses receive notification about AI-generated calls
- Human reviewers monitor AI-generated results for quality assurance
- All automated calls and data collection practices are disclosed to call recipients
Availability and Access
The feature is currently available in the United States through Search Labs. Due to capacity limitations, some users may be placed on a waitlist after opting in. Google plans to evaluate the pilot program's success before potentially expanding to other business sectors.
