The fediverse is a network of interconnected social media servers, allowing users to share and view content across different platforms. In Threads, users can enable sharing to the fediverse, which allows them to see posts from federated users on other servers, such as Mastodon, Bookwyrm, and WriteFreely. This feature enhances the discovery of diverse perspectives by integrating posts from various platforms into a single feed.
With the new search feature and dedicated fediverse feed, users can easily find and interact with content from federated profiles. For instance, if a thought leader shares a post from Mastodon to the fediverse, it will appear in the Threads feed. The content is displayed in reverse chronological order, ensuring users see the latest posts first. This setup resembles curating a personal newsletter, where users can engage with contributors from multiple apps like Ghost, Flipboard, and WordPress.
To search for a federated user, users can type their name in the Threads search bar, and if there’s an exact match, their profile will be displayed with a fediverse icon. These features aim to foster community engagement and vibrant conversations across platforms.
Celebrating one year of the fediverse on Threads, significant progress has been made in interoperability. Since launching the sharing feature, Threads has interacted with over 75% of all fediverse servers. Initially available for users 18+ in the US, Japan, and Canada, the feature has since expanded globally, excluding the European Region. Threads continues to prioritize building a safe and diverse community while collaborating with developers and policymakers to enhance the fediverse experience.
