The Core Web Vitals technology report for April 2024 indicates a decline in performance for five out of six popular content management systems (CMS) compared to the beginning of the year. The data, sourced from HTTPArchive and Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX), reveals trends in mobile and desktop performance for various CMS platforms.
Core Web Vitals Technology Report
The report combines real-world data from CrUX and lab data from HTTP Archive to evaluate CMS performance. The scores represent the percentage of website visits that achieved a good Core Web Vitals (CWV) score, focusing on mobile data.
Top Core Web Vitals Performance
- Duda: The highest-performing CMS with 71% of visits resulting in a good CWV score, leading by 13 percentage points over the second-place CMS.
- Squarespace: Second with 58%.
- Drupal: Third with 54%.
- Wix: Fourth with 52%.
- Joomla: Fifth with 43%.
- WordPress: Sixth with 38%.
WordPress Performance
Despite being ranked sixth, WordPress showed the smallest performance drop, less than one percentage point, thanks to over 100 performance improvements in version 6.5 released in April 2024. The average Page Weight and image download size increased slightly, which may have contributed to its performance lag.
Performance Drops By CMS
- Wix: -7.11 percentage points
- Duda: -5.41 percentage points
- Joomla: -2.84 percentage points
- Drupal: -2.58 percentage points
- WordPress: -0.71 percentage points
- Squarespace: +3.92 percentage points (the only CMS with improved performance)
Core Web Vitals Scores β Takeaways
Duda remains the top performer, followed by Squarespace, Wix, and Drupal. Only Squarespace improved its performance this year. The performance drops in other CMS platforms may be due to increased page weight, particularly in images. WordPress continues to make significant improvements, and its slight performance drop is likely due to user practices rather than platform issues.
Overall, all platforms show steady improvements, making them competitive in terms of performance.
