Google has announced the official discontinuation of its Web Vitals Chrome extension with the release of Chrome 132, marking the complete integration of Core Web Vitals monitoring into the DevTools Performance panel.
Following September's announcement, Google has completed the migration of all key features from the Web Vitals extension into DevTools. Current extension users will begin receiving end-of-support warnings, and Google plans to revoke the extension's CrUX API key, which will impact the field data integration functionality.
Migration Resources
Google has released a comprehensive migration guide to assist users in locating equivalent features within DevTools. The company encourages users to:
- Transition to the live metrics view in DevTools for measuring local Core Web Vitals experiences
- Review the public hotlist of issues for feature status updates
- Submit feature requests for any missing functionality needed for their workflow
For users unable to complete the migration to DevTools, Google has provided instructions for maintaining a local copy of the extension. This serves as a temporary solution for those with specific requirements not yet supported in DevTools.
Future Development
While the Performance panel currently incorporates all major features from the Web Vitals extension, Google continues to develop and enhance the tool's capabilities. The company maintains that the current DevTools Performance panel offers robust debugging capabilities that extend beyond the original extension's functionality.
