In July 2024, Instagram launched the Instagram API with Instagram Login, creating a streamlined onboarding process for businesses and creators using third-party partner solutions. This API enables all Instagram accounts to utilize third-party apps without requiring a linked Facebook Page.
New Insights Features
Instagram has now added User and Media Insights to help account holders better understand their content performance and optimize their content creation strategy. These insights match those previously available through the Instagram API with Facebook Login.
With these insights, businesses and creators can:
- Measure the number of views on individual content pieces including posts, stories, and reels
- Track the overall number of people visiting their profile or interacting with their account
- Access follower trend data, including top follower locations and age demographics
Developers seeking to implement these insights must request the instagram_business_manage_insights
permission, which was introduced with this update. Advanced access is required to request permission from any app user.
While Instagram continues supporting the Instagram API with Facebook Login, they recommend using Instagram API with Instagram Login to leverage these latest updates.
Accessibility Enhancements for Content Publishing API
Instagram has also introduced accessibility features to the Content Publishing API, specifically designed for users with visual impairments. Developers can now use the alt_text field to provide descriptive text for images when creating Instagram Feed posts.
This accessibility update is currently available for:
- Image posts on the Instagram Feed
The feature is not yet supported for feed posts containing videos, stories, or reels.
