Meta has introduced a new Tweetdeck-style UI for Threads on desktop. This new layout allows users to create columns for topics of interest and have real-time feeds of each displayed on screen. Users can create live-streams of Threads posts on their chosen topics, enabling them to stay updated with various conversations in the app.
The new layout also allows users to pin separate columns for favorite searches, tags, accounts, saved posts, and notifications, similar to TweetDeck, now known as "X Pro". This could be a significant update as Threads' key strength is real-time discussion and keeping users up to date with topics of interest.
However, the Threads team has been resistant to real-time feeds due to concerns of spam and misinformation. Meta's goal for Threads is to create a more positive real-time social experience, hence it's moving away from news and politics and limiting the number of hashtags per post.
Threads is also adding a "Recent" sorting option in search results, bringing it closer to a live-stream of content. Despite some hesitation to replicate Twitter exactly, Threads is shaping up as a viable alternative as more people shift away from Elon Musk's X project.
Threads has gained momentum with 150 million monthly active users, despite some indications of slowed adoption over time. With more Twitter-like options and tools for broader use of Threads for conversations, the app could become a major competitor for the incumbent. The new desktop layout is currently being tested with selected users.
