Meta is working on developing advanced AI models and automated general intelligence (AGI). To ensure responsible development, it is joining the Frontier Model Forum (FMF), a non-profit AI safety collective that aims to establish industry standards and regulations around AI development. FMF is dedicated to advancing the safety of frontier AI models and believes that safer AI will be more beneficial to society.
Meta and Amazon will join Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI as members of the FMF mission. This collaboration aims to establish best-in-class AI safety regulations.
Meta's President of Global Affairs, Nick Clegg, stated that Meta is committed to developing a safer and open AI ecosystem that prioritizes transparency and accountability. The FMF allows Meta to continue this work alongside industry partners.
The FMF is working on establishing an advisory board and institutional arrangements, including a charter, governance, and funding, with a working group and executive board leading these efforts. The FMF will also address concerns such as the generation of illegal content, misuse of AI, copyright, etc.
Meta's Fundamental AI Research team (FAIR) is working towards developing human-level intelligence and simulating the brain's neurons digitally. While the current AI tools are impressive, they are complex mathematical systems that match queries with responses based on accessible data. AGI, on the other hand, will be able to formulate ideas without human prompts, which could lead to potential problems. Therefore, organizations like FMF are crucial to overseeing AI development and ensuring responsible experimentation.
