The new functionality appears as a downvote arrow positioned next to comments, allowing users to privately indicate their discomfort or disagreement with specific comments. Unlike traditional dislike buttons, this feature maintains user privacy by not displaying any visible counts.
Instagram has implemented this feature with user privacy in mind. When users tap the down arrow button:
- No public dislike count is shown
- Other users cannot see who has used the feature
- The feedback remains completely private
This new testing phase represents Instagram's ongoing efforts to create safer and more comfortable spaces for user interaction while maintaining privacy and reducing potential negative social dynamics.
