Google's John Mueller has indicated that the disavow link tool may be removed from Google Search Console in the future. This follows Bing's decision to drop the tool from Bing Webmaster Tools in September 2023.
The disavow link tool is used to inform Google that certain backlinks to a site should be ignored. However, Mueller has stated that the tool is rarely needed and has warned against SEO tools that suggest regular cleanup of "toxic links".
He emphasized that the disavow links tool is not something that should be used on a regular basis, and using it as such could be a red flag. He also mentioned that most spammy, paid, placed, or swapped links are simply ignored by Google nowadays.
Mueller's comments were in response to a question about whether Google would follow Bing's lead and remove the disavow tool. He responded, "At some point, I'm sure we'll remove it."
Google has consistently advised against using the disavow link tool, stating that it often does more harm than good. The discussion originated from a thread on when to use and when not to use the disavow link tool.
