Google Ads will introduce a checkbox for political ads to indicate the use of "Altered or synthetic content" starting July 2024. Advertisers must disclose synthetic or digitally altered content in election ads. For specific ad formats, Google will generate in-ad disclosures, while for others, advertisers must provide clear disclosures themselves. The definition of US election ads now includes various officeholders and political entities.
Disclosure Requirements
From July 2024, under the Political content policy, advertisers must disclose election ads containing synthetic or digitally altered content. This content includes inauthentic depictions of real or realistic-looking people or events. Advertisers will select a checkbox in the “Altered or synthetic content” section in their campaign settings.
In-Ad Disclosures by Google
For the following formats, Google will generate an in-ad disclosure based on the checkbox:
- Feeds on Mobile Phones
- Shorts on Mobile Phones
- In-stream (Computers, Mobile Phones, Mobile Web, and TV Screens)
Advertiser's Responsibility
For all other formats, advertisers must select the checkbox and provide a prominent disclosure. The disclosure must be clear, conspicuous, and placed where it is likely to be noticed by users. Acceptable disclosure language will vary depending on the ad's context.
