End-to-end encryption on Messenger is a security feature that ensures no one except the communicating users can see the messages. It acts as an extra layer of security that protects messages and calls with family and friends from the moment they leave the sender's device until they reach the receiver's device. This means that during the delivery process, not even Meta can see or listen to what's sent or said.

To ensure your messages and calls are protected with end-to-end encryption on Messenger, look for a notice in your chats that says "messages and calls protected with end-to-end encryption." Once your chats are end-to-end encrypted by default, they will always be secured with this level of encryption to protect the content of your conversations.

To access your Messenger chat history in secure storage, you can set up a 6-digit PIN or store a virtual key in your Google Drive or iCloud. Secure storage saves your end-to-end encrypted chat history remotely, allowing you to restore your chat history if you get a new device. Without secure storage, your messages and media may be permanently lost if you lose your device. Messenger will prompt you to set up your preferred method to access your secure storage when your chats become end-to-end encrypted.

Default end-to-end encryption on Messenger is rolling out globally over the coming months. The process is gradual, and you may notice that some chats become end-to-end encrypted before others. This phased roll-out is to be expected.
