Apple opens the App Store to retro game emulators

Apple has announced that game emulators can now be available on the App Store globally and offer downloadable games. However, these games must comply with all applicable laws, which implies that Apple will ban apps providing pirated titles.

iPhone owners in the European Union might be interested in third-party app stores because, until now, game emulators have been banned from iOS. This led iPhone owners to seek workarounds such as jailbreaking. The availability of third-party app stores in the region provides an alternative to access such apps.

Apple has updated its rules stating that mini-games and mini-apps within super apps, such as WeChat, must use HTML5. This clarifies that these mini-games and mini-apps cannot be native apps and games.

In response to pressure from the European Commission, Apple has made another rule update. The company will now allow music streaming apps in the European Union to include in-app links that direct users to outside purchases and mention pricing information. Additionally, developers can invite users to provide their email addresses to send them a link to the developer's website for purchasing digital music content or services.

Spotify is not satisfied with Apple's most recent changes to the App Store rules. Despite the EU Commissioner Margrethe Vestager's statement that Apple must allow music streaming apps to communicate 'freely' with users, Apple plans to charge a commission on purchases made through outside links. Spotify's spokesperson, Jeanne Moran, has stated that following the law is not optional and that Apple continues to defy the decision. Spotify is urging for decisive action to ensure consumers have real choice.
