Reddit users will soon see AI-generated summaries at the top of search results. Reddit co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman announced during an earnings call that the company plans to test AI-powered search result pages to summarize and recommend content, helping users explore content more deeply and discover new communities. This feature will use a combination of first-party and third-party technology and will be tested later this year.
In May, Reddit partnered with OpenAI to leverage its large language models for building AI-powered features. This partnership allows OpenAI to use Reddit's data. Reddit also signed a similar agreement with Google earlier this year.
AI was a significant topic during the earnings call. Huffman highlighted the success of Reddit’s AI-powered language translation feature, noting that France is one of its fastest-growing countries. The translation feature is being expanded to German, Spanish, and Portuguese.
This earnings call was Reddit's second since becoming a public company. For the second quarter, Reddit reported 342.3 million weekly active users, a 57% increase from the previous year. Revenue rose to $281.2 million, surpassing Wall Street estimates of $253.8 million.
