Meta is initiating tests for the Community Notes program on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads in the United States. This program aims to replace the previous third-party fact-checking system, allowing a broader range of contributors to provide context to posts, potentially reducing bias. Initially, notes will not be publicly visible as Meta ensures the system functions correctly. The testing phase begins on March 18th, with around 200,000 potential contributors already signed up.
Functionality of Community Notes
The Community Notes system is inspired by X’s model, where users can add context to posts. Contributors will have the autonomy to write and rate notes, which will only be published if there is consensus among users with diverse viewpoints. Notes are limited to 500 characters and must include a supporting link. Contributors must be over 18, have an account older than 6 months, and meet security requirements. The feature will initially support six languages, including English and Spanish, with plans for expansion.
Development and Implementation
Meta plans to utilize X’s open-source algorithm for the initial rating system, allowing for improvements tailored to its platforms. The rating system will consider contributors' history and differing opinions. While the process may not be flawless, Meta is committed to ongoing enhancements based on user feedback.
Community Notes are expected to be less biased than the previous fact-checking program, which faced criticism for political biases. The new system encourages diverse perspectives and requires agreement among contributors to publish notes, minimizing the risk of manipulation. Unlike fact-checked posts, those with Community Notes will not face distribution penalties, allowing for broader visibility and sharing.
Meta intends to expand Community Notes globally after successful testing in the U.S., while maintaining the third-party fact-checking program in other countries until then.
