Google is enhancing its defenses against online scams using AI technologies across Search, Chrome, and Android. The newly released "Fighting Scams in Search Report" highlights how AI has enabled Google to detect and block hundreds of millions of scam pages daily, achieving a 20-fold increase in scam detection. This advancement helps ensure users receive legitimate search results and protects sensitive data from malicious sites.
In Search, AI analyzes vast amounts of web content to identify coordinated scam campaigns and emerging threats, significantly reducing scams impersonating airline customer service by over 80%.
For Chrome, the Enhanced Protection mode of Safe Browsing now utilizes Gemini Nano, an on-device large language model (LLM), offering users double the protection against phishing and scams compared to Standard Protection. This model provides real-time insights on risky websites, adapting quickly to new scam tactics. Protection against remote tech support scams is already in place, with plans to expand to Android devices.
To combat spammy notifications, new AI-powered warnings in Chrome on Android will alert users to potentially malicious notifications, allowing them to unsubscribe or view blocked content.
Additionally, Google has introduced on-device AI-powered Scam Detection in Google Messages and Phone for Android users, targeting sophisticated scams initiated through calls and texts. Google remains committed to leveraging AI advancements to enhance user safety and combat evolving scam tactics.
