Google AdSense is enhancing vignette ads by adding three new triggers starting 9 February 2026 to increase revenue from engaged users without disrupting their experience. These new triggers will be automatically enabled after a 1-month review period unless users opt out. The update introduces a control called Allow additional triggers for vignette ads in Auto ads settings, managing both existing and new triggers to unlock more high-value impression opportunities.
Existing and New Triggers
Existing triggers include:
- Unhiding a tab/window (e.g., revisiting a tab after switching or unlocking the device)
- Clicking the browser's navigation bar (desktop only)
- Opening a page within the same site in a new tab and switching to it
New triggers are:
- Reaching the end of a page's main article and either scrolling back up or waiting 5 seconds on mobile or 10 seconds on desktop
- Being inactive for at least 30 seconds followed by user interaction (scroll or click)
- Navigating backward using the browser's back button on supported browsers (Chrome, Edge, Opera)
Implementation and User Options
- The new control will appear enabled by default on 9 February 2026 but will not affect ad delivery for one month.
- If no action is taken, the new triggers will activate automatically on 9 March 2026.
- Existing frequency caps remain in place to maintain a balanced user experience.
- Users can opt out anytime, but disabling this control also turns off existing triggers.
How to Opt Out
To opt out of additional triggers:
- Sign in to your AdSense account.
- Click Ads.
- In your sites table, click Edit next to your site.
- Click Overlay formats.
- Click Advanced settings, then untick Allow additional triggers for vignette ads.
