Colorado AI Act (CAIA) (SB-205) was signed into law by Governor Polis on May 17, 2024. This law, the first comprehensive one in the U.S. to govern artificial intelligence systems, establishes new individual rights and protections against high-risk AI systems. It aims to prevent discriminatory outcomes from the use of AI and will come into effect on February 1, 2026.
The CAIA was developed with extensive stakeholder engagement, led by Colorado Senate Majority Leader Rodriguez and Connecticut Senator Maroney. It also involved a bipartisan multistate policymaker working group convened by FPF. The law incorporates multiple perspectives and diverse stakeholder input, acknowledging the complexity of regulating emerging technologies like AI.
Amendments from stakeholders were also incorporated throughout the legislative process to create a framework supporting functionality and consumer protection.
FPF has released a Two–Page Fact Sheet summarizing the key definitions, consumer rights, and business obligations established by SB-205.
