On May 17, 2024, Colorado's Governor Polis signed the Colorado AI Act (CAIA) (SB-205) into law. This is the first comprehensive U.S. law governing high-risk artificial intelligence systems. The law, effective from February 1, 2026, sets up individual rights and protections against discriminatory AI use. The CAIA, developed through extensive stakeholder engagement, balances functionality and consumer protection.
