Meta has acquired the Threads.com domain name, as confirmed by updated Whois records on September 24. The domain, previously owned by a Sequoia-backed Slack alternative startup, was transferred to Meta’s Instagram. Although Meta has not yet commented on whether it plans to move its Threads social network to Threads.com, the acquisition follows Shopify's purchase of Threads.com in June for an undisclosed amount.
The original owner of Threads.com noted that several companies had approached them about an acquisition following Meta's launch of its social network. They eventually decided to sell, citing the time investment required for a rebrand and the appeal of joining a larger platform.
Threads.com experienced a surge in app downloads when Meta launched its social network. The co-founder and CEO of Threads.com, Rousseau Kazi, highlighted the significance of the term "Threads" as a powerful and internet-native word. Meta’s Threads has since grown to over 200 million users.
