X's Grok AI chatbot is now accessible to Premium subscribers in the UK, marking the first European country to gain access to X's AI interface. Grok, similar to ChatGPT, allows users to pose conversational queries and receive direct in-stream responses. The chatbot is available in all countries where X Premium can be accessed, excluding E.U. and E.E.A member nations.
Elon Musk, X's owner, initially invested in OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. However, after a failed attempt to become CEO of the project, Musk developed his own AI tool, Grok. Grok's significant advantage is its access to X's post database, which ensures up-to-date accuracy.
Following Brexit, the UK, no longer an E.U. member state, received access to the chatbot before E.U. countries. X is still negotiating with E.U. regulators to launch the chatbot in the region. Musk describes Grok as "not woke" and designed to answer questions "with a bit of wit and has a rebellious streak". The chatbot is modeled after "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", which may resonate with British users.
Despite less than 1% of X users signing up for the subscription offering, X hopes that Grok will attract more paying users. As the bot improves, it may become a more significant draw for paying X users.
