X has introduced a new pricing structure for its API access aimed at attracting developers, particularly smaller ones. The revised model allows charges based on actual usage rather than a flat monthly fee, with fewer rate limits and scaled pricing. X emphasizes its commitment to supporting developers by enhancing the developer platform and launching a revamped Dev Console.
A new interactive dashboard has been created to help developers estimate costs for their specific data access. Selected developers can apply to join a beta program, with successful applicants receiving a $500 voucher for API usage. This move aims to regain developers who left due to significant price increases since Elon Musk's takeover, which were primarily intended to prevent AI projects from using X data.
Despite these changes, the new pricing model may not be as beneficial as hoped. For instance, the current X Basic API access package costs $200 per month for specific usage limits, while the new model estimates $575 for the same access. Overall, X's API costs remain higher than under Twitter, likely preventing many former Twitter apps from returning. However, it may allow third-party platforms to enhance their X features, potentially providing more insights into X usage in the future.
