More than 3 billion people in over 180 countries use WhatsApp, which is introducing message translations to enhance communication across languages. Users can long-press a message and select Translate to convert it to a desired language, applicable in 1:1 chats, groups, and Channel updates. Android users can enable automatic translation for entire chat threads, translating all future messages.
The translations prioritize privacy, occurring on the user's device without WhatsApp's access. The rollout begins gradually for Android and iPhone users, starting with six languages for Android: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic, while iPhone users will have access to 19+ languages. This feature aims to break down language barriers and foster deeper connections among users.
