WhatsApp has introduced voice chat functionality for groups of all sizes, allowing users to connect live over audio without leaving the group chat or switching to a call. Previously limited to large groups, anyone in a group can now start a voice chat by swiping up and holding at the bottom of the chat. This feature does not notify or ring members, enabling participants to join or leave the voice hangout at their convenience. The voice chat remains pinned at the bottom of the chat for easy access to call controls, and new members can see who is already participating. WhatsApp continues to protect these voice chats with end-to-end encryption by default, ensuring privacy and security.
