Reddit is reintroducing its awards system after discontinuing it last year. The majority of the award mechanisms will remain the same, with a few new features such as a new design for awards, an award button under eligible posts, and a leaderboard for top awards earned.
The decision to bring back the awards program was discussed during Reddit's first earnings call as a public company. Previously, Reddit had replaced its awards program and coin purchasing ability with "Golden Upvotes", purchased directly with cash. However, the company found this system less expressive than the awards. To give awards, users will need to purchase "gold", replacing the previous coin system. Awards typically cost between 15 to 50 gold, with gold packages starting at $1.99 for 100 gold. Users can purchase up to 2,750 gold for $49.99.
New safeguards are being added to the awards system, including disabling awards in NSFW, trauma and addiction support, and mature content subreddits. Users can also report awards to prevent their use for moderator removals.
In addition to the reintroduction of the awards system, Reddit has expanded its community rewards program, which pays users for useful contributions, to 35 countries.
