Reddit is enhancing user control over advertising with a new feature rolling out this week. Redditors will now have the ability to 'Hide' ads from their feed, automatically blocking future ads from that advertiser account for at least one year.
How the New Feature Works
When users choose to hide an ad, Reddit will prevent ads from the same advertiser account from appearing in their feeds for a minimum of 12 months. After this period, users can re-hide ads if they begin to appear again.
For cases where users believe an ad violates Reddit's policies, the platform encourages using the "report" function instead. Reporting an ad will automatically hide it and future ads from the same advertiser account from the user's feed, similar to the hide function.
Availability and Implementation
This update will be gradually implemented across all platforms:
- iOS
- Android
- www.reddit.com
The rollout is expected to take place over the next several weeks. The 'Hide' option will be available for all ads appearing in feeds, including home and subreddit feeds.
Building on Previous Ad Control Features
This new capability builds upon Reddit's previous improvements to ad controls introduced last year, which included sensitive ad filters. These filters allow users to limit ads on specific topics such as politics and religion.
Reddit has indicated that they are committed to continuing improvements to ad controls based on user feedback, with more updates planned for the future.
