Meta has introduced a new Travel Mode for its Quest 2 and 3 VR headsets, aiming to make VR experiences more accessible. This feature allows users to engage in VR experiences anywhere, overcoming the current limitation of needing a dedicated space for VR.
Travel Mode transforms Quest into an ultimate in-flight entertainment device, enabling users to watch movies on a virtual screen, play games, use meditation apps, and even work privately. The new feature also accounts for the motion of the vehicle, reducing impacts on the VR experience.
Currently, Travel Mode is optimized for use on planes, but Meta plans to extend its support to other modes of transportation, like trains. When activated, Travel Mode automatically detects in-flight Wi-Fi, if available.
In collaboration with Lufthansa, Meta is working on a new initiative to provide dedicated Quest 3 offerings to Lufthansa Allegris Business Class Suite customers. Meta's business partner, MSM.digital, will create content and provide device setup, distribution, management, and technical support.
This development is expected to significantly enhance the value of the VR experience, making it a more useful tool for interaction in various ways. However, there are concerns about potential issues, such as criminals targeting people distracted within VR worlds or incidents occurring while users are immersed in VR.
Travel Mode is now available under the "Experimental Features" section in the "Settings" menu of Quest devices.
