Instagram is testing a new feature called "trial reels" that allows creators to experiment with reels without displaying them to their followers. This feature aims to provide a low-pressure environment for creators to test new content. When a reel is posted using this feature, Instagram will provide performance insights such as plays, likes, comments, and shares. Based on these insights, creators can decide to share the reel with their followers or archive it.
This feature evolved from an earlier test known as "Experiment mode," which also allowed creators to post reels visible only to non-followers. A screenshot by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi showed that while these reels wouldn't be visible on the creator's profile, followers could still see them if shared directly. These reels would be archived after 24 hours if not shared publicly.
Instagram is currently experimenting with different versions of this feature, including varying archival times. Creators involved in the test will receive a notification when they go to publish a reel. Instagram has not provided further comments on the tests, with a Meta spokesperson stating they are always exploring new ways for creators to express themselves.
