Google has restructured its Product Structured Data documentation, breaking down the original 6,000-word document into three distinct, topic-focused pages.
Product structured data is crucial for ecommerce and product review websites, as it aids in qualifying for rich result listings on Google's search engine results pages (SERPs). The restructuring simplifies the large product structured data webpage, making it more digestible for the ecommerce community.
The original document, Product Structured Data, has been renamed to Introduction To Product Structured Data. The word count has been reduced from 4,808 to 667 words, with about 50% of the new document containing the same content. A new section, Deciding Which Markup To Use, has been added, which serves as a starting point to the two new pages.
The three new product structured data documents are:
- Introduction To Product structured data
- Product Snippet Structured Data
- Merchant listing Structured Data
A new blue tinted callout box has been added to draw attention to the Product Variant Structured Data page. The new documentation has been extensively rewritten to clarify the topic of each section.
The first new page, Product Snippets, focuses on adding product structured data to become eligible for rich results about ratings, reviews, price, and product availability. The second new page, Merchant Listing Structured Data, is dedicated to the product structured data specific to merchant listings, crucial for surfacing products in the shopping-related rich results which Google calls Merchant Listing Experiences.
The decision to split the original document into three subtopics was based on user needs, aiming to provide more focused and user-friendly content.
