TikTok is permanently discontinuing its "TikTok Lite" rewards program in Europe after an EU Commission investigation. The program, which offered cash incentives for in-app activity in France and Spain, raised concerns about potential violations of the Digital Services Act (DSA) and the risk of app addiction among younger users. To avoid penalties of up to 6% of its global revenue, TikTok has committed to ending the program permanently.
The EU Commission has made this commitment legally binding, meaning any breach would violate the DSA and result in fines.
This decision concludes the Commission’s investigation and sets a precedent for the DSA process, aiming to ensure greater protections for EU users. While it may limit certain innovations, it is expected to enhance accountability and transparency in social media practices.
