TikTok is enhancing its direct messaging (DM) features by allowing users to send voice notes and share up to nine images or videos in one-to-one and group chats. Voice notes can be up to 60 seconds long, aligning TikTok’s messaging capabilities with other popular platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram. This update aims to position TikTok as a platform for regular user interaction beyond video sharing.
Users can capture new photos or videos or select from their camera roll, with editing options before sending. However, for privacy and safety, users cannot send images or videos as the initial message request, and content sharing is restricted for first-time contacts. TikTok also reminds users to be cautious about privacy when sharing media.
Safety measures are strengthened for users aged 16 to 18, including automated detection and blocking of nude images, preventing both sending and receiving such content. Users over 18 can enable or disable this safety feature in their settings. TikTok restricts DM access to users under 16.
These new features build on TikTok’s recent messaging expansions, such as group chats for up to 32 people and Creator Chat Rooms for creators and followers to interact. The enhancements reflect TikTok’s goal to facilitate richer, safer communication among its users.
