Dotdash Meredith, a major US digital publisher, has entered a licensing agreement with OpenAI. The deal allows OpenAI to use Dotdash Meredith's content to train its algorithms, collaborate on new AI products, and provide real-time information to ChatGPT users.
The agreement is crucial as Dotdash relies on advertising traffic from intent-based search queries, a sector where generative artificial intelligence is expected to have a significant impact.
As part of the deal, OpenAI will display content and links from Dotdash Meredith's websites in responses to ChatGPT user queries and collaborate on new AI products and features. Dotdash Meredith operates over 40 premium publishing sites, including People, Better Homes & Gardens, Verywell, InStyle, and Investopedia.
D/Cipher, Dotdash Meredith's AI-driven ad-targeting tool, will be enhanced using OpenAI's large-language models. This enhancement will offer more precise targeting and improved ad performance in a soon-to-be cookieless world.
Dotdash Meredith CEO Neil Vogel has highlighted the opportunities AI offers publishers, but also emphasized that AI will not be used in editorial content. The media industry is currently divided on how to negotiate with AI firms, with some outlets partnering with AI firms, while others opt to sue them.
