OpenAI, led by CEO Sam Altman, is expected to announce the integration of real-time data from English, Spanish, and French publications into ChatGPT. This update is speculated to be an iterative improvement to the AI model, not a replacement. Altman has dismissed rumors of launching a new search engine to compete with Google, emphasizing his focus on technological disruption and changing the search paradigm.
OpenAI has been striking deals with news media and User Generated Content publishers since December 2023. These partnerships, often misinterpreted as merely licensing content for training large language models, actually provide OpenAI with access to real-time information. This data is expected to be attributed in the form of links within ChatGPT, enabling users to access real-time news and use that information creatively.
One such partnership is with Dotdash Meredith (DDM), a publisher of big brand publications. The deal extends beyond using DDM's content as training data, with OpenAI planning to display content and links attributed to DDM in relevant ChatGPT responses. OpenAI will also enhance DDM’s in-house ad targeting for more focused contextual advertising.
OpenAI has also partnered with French news publication Le Monde and Spanish language multimedia company Prisa Media. These deals give OpenAI access to real-time data in French and Spanish, with the aim to bring this content directly to ChatGPT users. The partnerships will enable users to engage with high-quality content on recent events in ChatGPT.
Additional deals with other groups, such as The Financial Times, also emphasize the introduction of a new ChatGPT feature that will allow users to interact with real-time news and current events. The announcement on Monday, May 13, is expected to confirm these speculations.
