OpenAI's latest flagship model, GPT-4o, has driven the company's largest revenue spike on mobile, despite being freely available on the web. The model, which can handle text, speech, and video with real-time responsiveness and various emotive voice options, has encouraged more users to upgrade to OpenAI's paid subscription. However, the free tier does not extend to mobile users of the ChatGPT app. Instead, they are encouraged to upgrade to the $19.99 monthly subscription, ChatGPT Plus, to access the latest model.
This strategy has increased subscription demand among mobile users, leading to the largest revenue spike OpenAI has seen on mobile devices. According to Appfigures, the ChatGPT mobile app's net revenue jumped 22% on the day of the GPT-4o launch and continued to grow. On Tuesday, net revenue reached $900,000, nearly twice the app's daily average of $491,000.
From Monday to Friday of the launch week, the ChatGPT mobile app earned $4.2 million in net revenue across the App Store and Google Play. This revenue spike indicates a strong consumer demand for the latest AI experiments, especially on mobile, even if it costs more than a Netflix subscription.
The majority of the new revenue, 81%, came from Apple's App Store, with the U.S. being the top market, contributing $1.8 million in revenue. Other top countries included Germany, the U.K., Japan, France, Canada, Korea, Brazil, Australia, and Turkey. The revenue trend does not appear to be slowing down, and may even be increasing.
