Introducing Rerank, a new feature on Brave Search that allows users to customize search rankings by boosting or removing domains from their results. This feature enhances personalization by enabling users to provide explicit input, contrasting with traditional opaque personalization methods. Rerank is available for free on search.brave.com.
Rerank introduces a panel on the search results page where users can thumbs up (boost) or thumbs down (discard) domains. Boosted domains will appear higher in search results, while discarded domains will be excluded. Users can adjust or revert their choices at any time. Importantly, Rerank only affects individual users and does not alter rankings for others, maintaining Brave's commitment to privacy.
Use Cases
Rerank caters to personal search preferences, such as a professional interior designer who can discard irrelevant DIY content and boost results from specific decor magazines. Additionally, the Answer with AI feature will utilize modified search results to generate concise answers.
Goggles and Customization
Goggles, introduced in June 2022, allow users to create and share custom filters for search results. Examples include filters for political news or tech blogs. While Rerank offers a more straightforward approach to personalization, Goggles provide a way to address intrinsic biases in search algorithms. Users can switch between pre-made configurations and access a repository of community-created Goggles.
Brave Search is an independent search engine that prioritizes user privacy and does not profile users. It serves over 38 million queries daily and is the default search engine for many Brave browser users. Brave Search also features a Search API for other companies to integrate its capabilities.
Technical Note
Rerank changes are stored in localStorage and communicated via a cookie, ensuring that Brave Search does not track user queries or personal information.
