TikTok is testing a new feature called Footnotes, aimed at providing additional context to content on the platform. This feature will initially be available in the U.S. for short-form videos and is designed to enhance the understanding of content by allowing users to contribute relevant information. Footnotes will complement existing measures such as content labels, search banners, and a fact-checking program.
The platform, which serves over 170 million Americans, recognizes the vast amount of content shared, which can sometimes lack necessary context. Footnotes will enable users to share their expertise and add layers of context through a consensus-driven approach, enhancing discussions around various topics.
To become a Footnotes contributor, U.S. users must meet specific criteria: they must be over 18 years old, have been on the platform for more than 6 months, and have no recent violations of Community Guidelines. Contributors will be able to add footnotes and rate those provided by others.
The ranking system for Footnotes is designed to promote agreement among users with differing opinions, allowing contributors to vote on the helpfulness of footnotes. Only those deemed "helpful" will be visible to the community, and the system will improve as more footnotes are added and rated.
Footnotes will enhance TikTok's existing integrity measures, which include content labels for unverifiable information and partnerships with over 20 IFCN-accredited fact-checking organizations. This initiative aims to enrich discussions on TikTok and improve user experience for viewers, contributors, and creators. TikTok is eager to gather feedback as it continues to develop this program.
