LearnLM is a new family of models developed by Google for learning purposes. It's grounded in educational research and aims to make learning experiences more active, personal, and engaging. The models are developed by Google DeepMind, Google Research, and product teams. They are designed to:
- Inspire active learning
- Manage cognitive load
- Adapt to the learner
- Stimulate curiosity
- Deepen metacognition
LearnLM is being integrated into existing Google products like Search, YouTube, and Gemini to enhance learning experiences. For instance, Google Search will soon allow users to adjust AI Overview into a format that suits them. On Android, Circle to Search will help solve complex math and physics problems. Gemini will soon have custom versions called Gems that can act as personal experts on any topic.
LearnLM will also be used to build generative AI experiences for schools. A pilot program in Google Classroom is in progress to see how it can simplify and improve lesson planning. The goal is to augment teachers' capacity, giving them more time to invest in themselves and their students.
Two new experimental tools have been introduced:
- Illuminate: This tool breaks down research papers into short audio conversations. It generates audio with two AI-generated voices in conversation, providing an overview of key insights from complex papers.
- Learn About: This Labs experience explores how information can turn into understanding by bringing together high-quality content, learning science, and chat experiences.
Google is collaborating with institutions like MIT RAISE, Columbia Teachers College, Arizona State University, NYU Tisch, and Khan Academy to test and improve this technology. The aim is to explore the possibilities of applying advances in generative AI to teaching and learning.
